Yeah, for once I agree with Jim. Making fun of Cheney for his policies is fair game. Making fun of him for being wheelchair-bound…Not cool, Ces, not cool.

You should withdraw this strip from the site immediately and not put it in the archives. End of story.

  5. LurkerWithout said, on January 21, 2009 at 10:00 am

Or add sparkles to it. Mocking Cheney’s pain = AWESOME

  6. fanfromottawa said, on January 21, 2009 at 10:02 am

Cheney is in a wheelchair because he hurt his back moving boxes. Thousands of soldiers are in wheelchairs because they injured or lost their legs fighting in Iraq. Over a thousand soldiers are in their graves because they lost their lives fighting in Iraq. Cheney deserves every joke, barb, quip, sarcastic remark, comic thrown at him.

  7. Don, the Rebel without a Blog said, on January 21, 2009 at 10:03 am

Oh, no, don’t withdraw the strip. It’s an excellent example of the visciousness and hatefulness of the Left. Congratulations.

  8. RaleighRob said, on January 21, 2009 at 10:10 am

I agree with “fanfromottawa” —what this man has done to ruin the lives of tens of thousands makes him worthy of ridicule, plainly. I shed no tears for him.

Besides, it’s not like a fatal injury…he’ll be back on his feet shooting folks in the face and telling them to “Go F@&# Yourself” in no time.

And moving boxes? Are we sure he wasn’t just lugging tons of documents into a shredder??

  9. schtroumpf said, on January 21, 2009 at 10:18 am

Hey, I normally can’t stand Jim’s posts and even I agree with him.

This isn’t just a reference to moving boxes. Cheney is often (unfairly) mocked for his heart ailment and general age.

    Lose the strip, Ces.

  10. Skip Tracer said, on January 21, 2009 at 10:32 am

Have a heart, people! He threw out his back moving his gun collection.

Hey, I think it rocks – sometimes there is poetic justice in this world and yesterday was a perfect example. If only a gust of wind had caught the door of the White House so it could have hit Dubya in the ass as well…

  12. Kevin Moore said, on January 21, 2009 at 11:07 am

After an election season in which the VP candidate insinuated that Obama was a terrorist and not a real American, when McCain crowds were screaming racist and murderous epithets, please explain how “the Left” are more “hateful” than “the Right.”

I like the cartoon because it’s honest. I felt shock when Cheney was wheeled out. But sympathy? This guy has subverted our constitution to pursued policies that inflicted death and destruction on innocent people, violated our rights as citizens, and tortured both innocent and not-so-innocent alike, against the rule of law and perverting justice. To what – protect us? No, to enhance the executive power of the state and to enrich his cronies at Halliburton.

  16. Jim said, on January 21, 2009 at 11:15 am

Kevin: The left and the right are both very hateful.

  17. Leo Petr said, on January 21, 2009 at 11:26 am

Uh, the strip isn’t making fun of Cheney, at least not primarily. It’s a) primarily making fun of people being excited about Obama’s inauguration b) secondarily making fun of people being vindictive about Cheney c) and only tertiarily making fun of Cheney. It’s a bloody side-side-joke, people!

  18. Leo Petr said, on January 21, 2009 at 11:26 am

    BTW, awesome strip!:-)

    Umm – I’m offended by the kittens….

No, seriously, this is what makes politics such a great spectator sport. Besides, don’t feel too bad for Dick Cheney. I understand he’s signed a contrct to develop a new show on the Outdoor Life network: “Dick Cheney’s Hunting with the Stars”

    First guest – Paris Hilton!

  20. The OK Gazoo said, on January 21, 2009 at 12:13 pm

Is there a comic for people who are offended by stealing Norm MacDonald’s Fantastic Four joke?

  21. Niall said, on January 21, 2009 at 12:18 pm

I’m with Leo Petr on this one – the strip is a giant mirror in the face of all those too quick to jump on a bandwagon or to cheer for stupid reasons. By doing a four-time repetition of what amounts to an ad-hominem attack, I feel a big pulling-back to see the ones shown are the ones being mocked, in a sense, and the strip isn’t the cartoonist getting on a soapbox.

By now, all regulars should know Ces is all about ridiculous exaggeration for the sake of _social_ commentary, not necessarily political commentary. In the great words of Donna Barr, “those who take it seriously – deserve to”. :)

  25. sarabenincasa said, on January 21, 2009 at 12:44 pm

Ces’s glorious original strip fucking rules. Dick Cheney is an asshole who sent many Americans (and far more Iraqi civilians–who, I would note, didn’t fucking volunteer for the job) to their deaths, unnecessarily. He also THREW HIS BACK OUT like my dad does every once in awhile playing GOLF. Cheney will be up and at ‘em in no time. Ces wasn’t mocking someone for having a horrible permanent life-altering injury. He was mocking the cunty head cheerleader who finally got a pie in the face at Homecoming.

If you didn’t get it, fuck off.

  26. Zev said, on January 21, 2009 at 12:50 pm

Ces–how about a comic for defensive cartoonists who can’t admit they did something wrong?

Sara–wow, you made a comment that, amazingly and unpredictably, defends the cartoon. Of course, the fact you’re sleeping with Ces has absolutely nothing to do with it. Good girl. Who’s a good girl, yesh? Give her a biscuit, Ces. Me, I’m done reading your smug-ass hate comic.

And by the way, I voted for Obama.

  27. p said, on January 21, 2009 at 12:50 pm

Geez, who knew how many undisclosed admirers Cheney has.

    p, that’s fucking hilarious.

  30. Michael Ezra said, on January 21, 2009 at 12:54 pm

Yeah, unlike Zev who needs to take a couple Valium, I always have good things to say about your comic. But this one is…well, it doesn’t quite cross the line but it’s pushing it.

And you know what they say when you have to explain a joke in order for people to find it funny…

Don’t let the haters get to you, though. Not everyone hits it out of the park every day. God bless.

  31. cesco7 said, on January 21, 2009 at 12:58 pm

    Zev:

Did I admit that I can’t do anything wrong? Doesn;’t the fact that I never delete a negative comment disprove that? And, no offense, but because you think I did something wrong in the comic does not mean I did I objectively did something wrong. You have your perspective on the strip, I have mine. I’m not trying to attack here but you seem to be acting very defensive simply because I did not agree with your position and remove the strip from both the page and the archive as you instructed earlier.

And the fact that you referred to my girlfriend as a pet when she in no way attacked you personally is beyond offensive. I’m sorry but you clearly showed your true colors simply because no one bowed to your opinion. Who is the defensive one? Who is full of hate and cannot allow other opinions? I think you’ve given us the definitive answer.

Michael: I don’t think I made an attempt to explain the strip. But I greatly appreciate your calm tone and in no way would force anyone to see something my way. Thank you for your civility as we agree to disagree.

  32. Zev said, on January 21, 2009 at 1:01 pm

“If you didn’t get it, fuck off.” Sara’s words.

Yeah, I’d call that a personal attack. I just gave her back tit for tat.

  33. cesco7 said, on January 21, 2009 at 1:04 pm

Um, did she call you out by name? No, she didn’t. That’s not a personal attack. That’s just you reacting in a very harsh and uncalled for manner because you seem to be angry at what is essentially a silly strip. It’s a comic. It’s one man’s take on a larger situation (see Niall and Leo’s take on it if you wish). I like the strip. You don’t. That should be the end of it. But you refuse to make it so.

  34. sarabenincasa said, on January 21, 2009 at 1:06 pm

Oh, yeah, I was telling him and other people who objected to fuck off (not Michael Ezra, though. Michael Ezra gets 17 bonus points because he is great. Fair? Maybe not, but I reserve the right to unfairly play favorites among your commenters for no apparent reason.)

So Zev has a point in that I was in fact telling him to fuck off. But you, Ces, win the day, not only because you shove biscuits in my ass on the regular, but because the first paragraph of your response to Zev is smart and civil and makes excellent points.

  35. sarabenincasa said, on January 21, 2009 at 1:08 pm

I will go back to being a cantankerous radio show host now and design topics for my show tonight, such as “OMG! Are balls hot or gross?” (I wish I were kidding. I am not.) 36. Michael Ezra said, on January 21, 2009 at 1:09 pm

“I think it’s the duty of the comedian to find out where the line is drawn and cross it deliberately.” — George Carlin

I could go into a schpiel of how a PUBLIC FIGURE is open for PUBLIC commentary, criticism and yes, ridicule. It comes with the territory. If ML was poking fun at little Joey, who was born with Cerebral Palsy and wo showed up at the church pancake breakfast in a wheelchair, because the walker no longer supports his weak muscles, then yeah, Ces just bought himself a ticket on the Express Train to Hell.

But people, please. We’re talking about Dick Vader. Bush’s right hand Dick. Yeah, it sucks to be in end-stage heart disease(“helping his wife move a box??”). It also sucks losing family and friends to an unnecessary war.

My God, when I started blogging about Sarah Palin?? Oh, the hate mail. It was AWESOME. Made me giggle. *sigh* I miss those days…

It’s called COMEDY, people. Lighten up. Don’t make me go all spider-monkeh on yo ass.

“If someone don’t like you for being yourself, fck em. Fck em up against the wall, wear handcuffs on them, and crazy glue their lips.” – Bernie Mac

Ces, I sowwy for the schpiel.

  44. Michael Ezra said, on January 21, 2009 at 2:33 pm

“Wear handcuffs on them?” I trust Mr. Mac meant “Put handcuffs on them.” The metaphor raises a disturbing enough mental picture as it is. But whatever, grammar aside he’s absolutely right.

Let us pray for an America united–left or right wing–under God. Amen.

In all seriousness, nearly everything Dick Cheney said while in office was way more offensive to rational people than this comic. And yeah, that’s my opinion, and nobody has to agree with it if they don’t want to.

My other opinion, for the record, is that balls are kinda gross. Even though I have a pair, sometimes they gross me out a little.

Anyway, I’d just like to say that the last two weeks or so of Medium Large have had some of my favorites since I started reading. Keep up the good work.

  58. Ken said, on January 21, 2009 at 4:40 pm

If you think the comic is funny (I do), then it’s funny to you. If you don’t then it’s not. But using it as an “example” of how “hateful the Left can be” or any one commnentator’s thought as “representative” of an entire political grouping, that’s…well, I hate to use the word “stupid”…but it fits so well. Just as Zev says he voted for Obama and finds it offensive, so could those on the alleged “Right” find it funny. There is no monolithic “groupthink” except what some assume to there to be.

Ces has no reason to take it down. If it offends you, don’t click on it.

Though my balls are offended that someone might think they’re gross (right now, they’re huddled in the shower, holding their knees, and crying while rocking back and forth…it’s going to take the rest of the night to coax then out of there), I am suddenly in the mood for biscuits.

I was mildly annoyed with this one for being fairly pedestrian and fish-in-a-barrel for a Ces effort. But I hadn’t seen the ADD comic before, and it’s actually funny, so I am placated.

It’s gratifying to see so much compassion displayed even for a profiteering war criminal. We are judged as a society by the compassion we show for the very worst among us, not the most beloved.

After watching Ghost Rider I don’t think it’s possible for anyone to tarnish the sacredness of Marvel Comics any further…

Norm’s album with the Fantastic Four bit came out in 2006, but the comic’s been around for over 40 years, so I doubt that no one’s ever thought of it before.

As for the original Cheney joke, I thought it was a great misdirection joke. I don’t even see any malicious intent in the joke, although if there was any, could you really think of more than a handful of people more deserving than Cheney?

On a side note, Cheney in a wheelchair would make an excellent Fantastic Four villain. He could pet one of those kittens while activating the doomsday device…

That being said, Cheney’s heinous association with Haliburton and KBR has led to them being one of the biggest causes of problems we’ve had over there with the insurgency. The way they have taken over the logistics of everything over there is just horrible.

So make fun of that fat, balding bastard as much as you like, Ces.
