I get it — when you have a terrible joke, make the joke be about how terrible the joke is.
It’s like Ted Baxter’s knock-knock joke on the Mary Tyler Moore Show:
“Knock, knock.”
“Who’s there?”
“Anna Maria Alberghetti.”
“Anna Maria Alberghetti Who?”
And so on.
At least the sandwich didn’t walk into Pearls Before Swine… he’d be eaten by the third panel.
