Failed Medium Large Pilots
Over the years Medium Large aired (if such a word can be used for a print medium) numerous TV series. Some, like Teenage Girl President and Victorian-Era Superhero achieved cult status (translation: would have been immediately pulled from any broadcast network). Others, however, were never seen again after their premiere–and final–episode. Below are just some of the many sitcom, drama, dramedy and crama pilots that for one reason or another were grounded right after take-off. Enjoy.

Man, “Hot Dork” is one of my all-time favorite MLs.
Where can I get one of those robots from the last strip?
I’ll second the love for “Hot Dork,” which just two days ago I was hoping would find its way back online. Looking at it now, I realize that I enjoy it so much not because of the long speech, the sloe-eyed look or even the midriff-baring Green Lantern T-shirt — it’s the guy, darn it. Put her by herself, or with a geek who’s hit the jackpot, or with a jerk who can “Yeah, whatever” his way through anything, and it’s not funny. Put her with a guy who’s torn between his hormones and his desire to avoid long conversations about “The Silmarillion,” and it’s comedy gold. (I might have thought about this strip way, way too much.)

I enjoyed Hot Dork as well, but really think it should be “Hot Geek”. A geek is not a dork. Everything she’s describing are geek activities. Nerd, geeks and dorks are all socially inept, but dorks are the sole group with the distinction of being stupid. Dorks are not sci-fi writers. They are the paste-eaters we went to school with. Geeks are the role-playing gamers and sci-fi readers. Nerds are the honors students — basically high-achieving geeks.
No, no, no. Geeks and dorks are sub-categories of nerds, and a nerds is a person who love to learn and doesn’t care who knows it. Now, geek refers to a number of subsets of nerds: drama geeks, computer geeks, Trekkies, etc. And finally the dorks are the nerds who are socially inept. One can be all three at the same time.
But someone who’s stupid and socially inept isn’t a nerd, because all nerds are smart in some way, shape, or form. They can be described as “morons”, “dumbasses”, or “f*ckoffs”.
I love Surrealist Bachelor. What does that say about me?
If I still wore t-shirts with cartoons on them, I would *have* to own a t-shirt of Forthright Robot.
I still want to, I just can’t carry it off.
Failing that, how about that speech balloon on a laminated card for easy reference?
Late again, but I’d LOVE ‘socially awkward jock’. I remember in college, at a frat/sorority mixer, (the frat was the ‘jock’ frat at our school) one of the guys said basically the same thing to me. (I guess he could be forgiven, as he was only a frosh, while I was a junior) Still…those guys left a lot to be desired, brain-wise. He actually thought that was a compliment!!
Man… “Hot Dork” is just like my life. That guy is exactly the same sort of guy I always meet, too.
Strawman is always showing up at political debates wreaking havoc. Shame he always gets beaten down.
“That Surrealist Bachelor” had me laughing so hard I couldn’t breathe. Every time I looked back at the comic strip, I burst out laughing again. I have no idea why.
What time is “Forthright Robot” on? I keep missing it. That robot is my hero.
Personally, I like “Hot Dork” and “Left-Hand Drawn Protagonist”.
conservative leaning lifeguard is right on the money! great stuff.
I really, really like Left-Hand Drawn Protagonist
I love Tough Cookie! Just look at that “Rooster Cogburn” grin and that furrowed brow.. and those delicious chocolate chips. I’m so rooting for that baked good!
