Writing, Googling, and Screwing Up

Posted in Uncategorized by cesco7 on April 4, 2018

Whenever you name something new in a comic strip (or any medium) you must do two things: 1) Make sure to avoid any horrible puns (this is why Ted has yet to break out his old cassingle “Ice Ice Nine Baby”) and 2) Make sure the name has not been used before. And so I Googled the character name “Starlee.” And so I Googled if any cartoon named “Starlee and the Moonebeams” had ever aired. And so I thought I had Googled every aspect of the series. That is until last week, while Googling to see what possible combination of words had not already been used as a Comic Con name (Answer: All of them), when I learned “Darkstars” was also the name of a DC Comics team. Alas, this was long after the name had already been used in a few strips. My sincere apologies.

But please join me next week when we introduced Ted’s new boss, Mr. Thanos Dithers. I have a good feeling about that one…

Given that the rival band to Jem and the Holograms (I assume that’s the primary inspiration behind “Starlee and the Moonbeams”?) was “The Misfits”, which was also the name of a *real* band that predated the Jem cartoon by almost a decade, I think you’re in the clear with “The Darkstars”. (Also, have the Darkstars even been a thing in DC over the past 20 years? I don’t think they were even all that important when they had their own series…)
