Please Remember…

Also keep in mind, people suffering from depression are often not in the position to seek help. In their darkest moments they believe they are devoid of value in the eyes of others and so cannot fathom any means of willing outside support. If you know someone who suffers from depression, please check up on them whenever you can. Call. Visit. Show that they are not alone and that they do in fact have people in their lives who will care and will indeed listen.

From Stacey Bell (with Her Permission): I am sincerely heartbroken to hear about Anthony Bourdain. As a person who suffers from depression and not only has suicidal thoughts but has attempted the deed more than once, the person who is in that dark place may honestly believe that they are hurting the ones they love by being alive. “They have to put up with me. They have to deal with who/what I am” and so on. It’s never about not caring, but misguidedly thinking that they are saving their loved ones from a horrible, fucked up person (themselves). With that in mind, if you know someone in this place, approach them gently. Don’t talk about them being selfish or if they die how horrible their loved ones will feel (Guess what, that’s only giving them more reason to believe suicide is the right decision) and certainly not talk about it will get better (depression is usually not a one day deal. They may have been dealing with this for weeks, months, or years, so “next day relief” may seem like a fairytale to them) Maybe talk about how people care for them. Maybe take them out for a day. Stay with them for a fun sleepover. Make them remember what it was like to be happy, and really know that it’s still possible. And lastly, a person has to see even a small crack of light in the hole they are in to call for help; don’t be afraid to make that call for them if they can’t do it.
