For most of my life, the word was “hamburger”. There came a few cutesy brand names (e.g., Burger King), the occasional quippy shorthand (‘burger), and all the mashups, beginning with “cheeseburger”. But everyone knew the real word. And then, rather suddenly it seems to me, I hear and read nothing but “burger”, whose ubiquity and lack of apostrophe indicate the status Real Word. Maybe it comes as a mental reverse-engineering of the mashups. (I’ve had a twenty-something start to tell me that “actually, ‘hamburger’ is a misnomer”!). Well, I don’t think I will ever accept “burger” as a real word (no apostrophe).

I am sad that “hamburger” seems to be on the way out. I wouldn’t be surprised if a majority of teens and younger folks have never even encountered the word, and maybe never will.
