Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!
I want to thank everyone who has taken the time to leave such encouraging, funny and remarkably thoughtful comments about my recent condition. They have made getting through this all the more hopeful and possible.
I also want to apologize for staying mum so long on the subject. I didn’t want to talk about it until I had a better idea of what was happening and–for personal morale sakes–had some indication that things would improve. While I have no intention of going into any graphic detail, I more than anyone know what a particularly squeamish topic the eye can be and so you are more than welcome to skip the following recap.
Last weekend my right eye started to water. Eventually it started to produce what one would consider more than its fair share of pus. At the same time my vision started to dim, not so much darken but cloud over. Initially I thought I was dealing with pink eye, since pus and foggy eyesight are indeed symptoms of such. But by Sunday night the eye was blood red and I could no longer see anything out of it except an impenetrable fog. Monday I went to the ophthalmologist and learned what I mistook for conjunctivitis was in fact a virulent infection that was robbing me of sight and had resulted in a “corneal ulcer.” Now, corneal ulcer’s are actually quite common and almost always the result of improper contact lens care. (Medium Large Public Service Announcement: If you wear contact lenses, ONLY use daily wear! I cannot stress this enough. Do not reuse lenses, do not sleep with lenses and do not swim with lenses–the latter two which I did not do.) However, my ulcer was a half-centimeter long and went directly over my pupil, meaning that even should the infection be contained the ultimate scarring could block all vision.
That said, I would not be writing this if things had taken a turn for the better recently. (After all, this is a supposed humor site, not a place for self-pity.) Thanks to a powerful cocktail of antibiotics administered every half-hour around the clock (and yes, I have gone mad from lack of sleep), I can now make out shapes and color and even some definition. Over the past half week that has steadily improved. The ulcer has also shrunk much more rapidly than initially presumed, to now only 1 mm. While recovery will be a long, slow process and my vision in my eye right will be foggy for quite some time, I can say that I am guardedly optimistic about the eventual results, even if full vision does not return. Of course, this is all made possible by dear friends (and one person in particular), your great encouragement and my being under the direct care of the Head of Ophthalmology for Columbia University, which also resulted in me passing time in a waiting room with Regis Philbin. (Though we did not talk and he certainly did not wait long.)
Once again, thank you very much for all your well wishes! I don’t think I could ever possibly express just how much they have meant to me and how they have made my outlook all the brighter! THANK YOU.
We’re glad you’re better and hope that you regain your full eyesight. Please take care of yourself and your eyes.
Here’s hoping you don’t need to dip into your Clonus investment quite yet.
Urgh! Hope the ulcer gets minuscule, hope the eye recovers, and hope you look cool rocking the eyepatch in the meantime. Good luck, and speedy recovery!
I haven’t commented on your wonderful site before. I have just blissfully sat back and enjoyed your humor but I just wanted to pass along how happy I am that you will soon be back in the saddle. Gratefully I have been blessed with near 20/20 vision (I can squint to 20/20 through a whole car ride!) so I can’t empathize completely but I hope this is the last time sticking a finger in your eye will cause an infection. As melhoras!
Very happy to hear your recovery is coming along smoothly. Best of luck with the eye, and get well soon.
I’ve always been very phobic about eye damage, so it’s a great relief to hear you’re better! This last week must have been really horrible. Get well soon
PS: F*** Regis 😀 I look forward to cartoon slam on him
Oh, wow, that’s awful. Here’s best wishes for a full and speedy recovery!
Wow! That’s terrible. Glad you are healing well. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!
Glad to hear you’re on the mend, Ces. Eye problems are nothing to sneeze at.
If only it had been Morgan Freeman in the waiting room — then you would be fully healed by now, and perhaps imbued with super powers.
Well, I guess you can’t have everything.
Best wishes on your continuing and complete recovery.
wow! here’s to a full (and fast) recovery! also, i’m a little relieved that i’ve recently switched to glasses after 15+ years of contact lens wear…
Oh, man. I’m very glad you received good treatment right away. I have two friends with the same story, only it was a retina detachment. I thought that’s what you were experiencing. It sounds like you’re going to make a good recovery!
I have laid an offering of only the finest meats and cheeses upon the altar of Occula, great goddess of all things Corneal, and she has assured me of a full recovery for you. Take good care of that eye, and I will be sure not to accidentally elbow you there next week when I arrive in NYC. 🙂
Whew. Glad to hear that you’re recovering. How scary.
Wow, I’m so sorry to hear you had to share a waiting room with Regis Philbin. What a relief to know you didn’t have a long exposure. Oh, and good news about the eye improvement, too. We’re all pulling for a full recovery.
Feel better soon! Your site is wonderful.
So sorry to hear about all this man, keep at it and hope things work out for the best 🙂
Feel better soon, Ces! And yow about the contacts. At least you look good in glasses and probably have some super cool ones, not the old pair from 1984 that you forgot to give to the Lions Club.
Good luck! Sorry to hear that it was not a simple matter, but I am glad that the treatment seems to be working so well.
And, oh by the way, when we said you were another Thurber, this is not what we were aiming for!
Ces, I’m a huge fan and I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I’ve scratched my right eye a few times in the past and now it’s dry and susceptible to “corneal erosion.” Whenever I have any discomfort in it that doesn’t go away after a few minutes, I have to immediately hie to the eye doctor. They now know me by name there, which is oddly comforting. Thankfully, I’ve never had it go that badly.
Take very good care of yourself and don’t try to rush things. I love “Medium Large” and hope you recover fully ASAP.
If you have an eyepatch, I’m sure you’re quite suave and mysterious-looking with it.
Holy Macaroni! Get well soon!
Best wishes on your continued recovery. And while it feels inapproopriate to try to make silly comments here, if worse comes to worst I hope you will consider the possibility of novelty prosthetic eyes. I’m particular to the “stainless steel ball” and the “Terminator glowing LED”.
Yipe! Glad you’re getting better, and I hope that continues.
Also, the Cathy bitch slap made me chuckle.
Best of luck and a speedy recovery!
Oh ick, I’m glad you didn’t go into graphic detail. I can’t imagine having some thing in my eye obscuring my vision. I am now more happy than before that I never switched from glasses to contacts.
Anyway, glad you’re doing better, and hope everything is hunky-dory again soon!
There must be somebody you can sue. Maybe start with Regis?
Seriously though, glad you’re doing better.
Get better soon. I miss the daily chuckle you bring. Your sick sense of humour brings a smile to my dreary day.
We miss you dearly and wish you get better and bionic if you don’t. 🙂
Wow. Scary stuff. Glad you’re on the mend, Ces, and get well soon.
My dad recently had a spontaneously detached retina (almost totally detached in one eye with signs of it occurring in the other) that could have very easily left him totally blind. I definitely understand the fear and insanity that can result from surprise permanent blindness. It’s a horrible thing, but I’m glad you’re taking it in stride, and I hope your optimism pans out into a satisfactory recovery.
That said, holy shit! Regis Philbin?
Hang in there, Ces. We’re all for you, and you love what you do for us. There’s not much scarier than sight problems, especially for a guy in your line. But as someone who’s used a hearing aid since he was ten, I assure you that you can fight your way through.
Best of luck! I wish you well and hope you have a speedy recovery.
-Brandon
Ces, I’m glad you caught the problem and got it treated, here’s hoping you continue to have a smooth recovery.
Scary situation, glad you are improving.
Thoughts and prayers for a speedy and full recovery Ces.
Thanks for the update and glad to hear about your improvement. We’ll send prayers of healing (and patience) your way.
Yow!! I’m glad you’re on the mend!
Oh, ow. I hope you heal up until you can upgrade to bionic eyes.
I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I hope you have a swift and complete recovery. Take care of yourself!
Rock the eye-patch, Ces! At least we can look forward to some Nick Fury/ Falcon-1 jokes out of this!
Add me to the list of well-wishers. Glad to hear modern medicine is helping you mend so quickly! Just think, you might not have been able to enjoy all the upcoming 3-D blockbusters in their full digitally-processed glory!
I have been a quiet reader for quite some time, but wanted to come out of the shadows and wish you the best in full recovery. I just recently stopped wearing contacts.after 20+ years, but not due to this issue.
Glad to hear you’re recovering, and I only wish you the best! The world can’t survive without the brilliance of Teenage Girl President or Victorian Era Superhero!
Add me to the well wishers…. (Also thinking about a friend who lost an eye at an early stage of his life: “I was always the designated drive because one of the first things that goes when you start drinking is depth perception, and since I never had any…”)
Wow. Glad to hear it’s getting better. I wish you a speedy recovery.
I’d like to add my voice to those wishing you a speedy and complete-as-possible recovery.
Glad things worked out. Eye problems are some of the worst things a person can have. Hope your recuperation is a speedy one.
Good god, I can’t imagine how frightening that was for you. Although they don’t work great, losing sight in one eye like that would be terrible for me. I”m really glad you got it figured out and are getting it all fixed up, and I hope you continue to recover quickly.
I’m not sure that I’ve ever commented before, but I read regularly. Anyway, first, ick, eye problems are so nasty and I’m sorry that you are going through this. I’ve been in a sort-of, not really, kinda similar situation before and yo, it ain’t fun. I’ll send positive, and vague, thoughts your way for 100% recovery.
i hope you get better soon franchesco! we all wish you well!
Scary stuff. Glad to hear the outlook is positive. And if worse comes to worse, eye patches, when matched with colorful head scarves, can be very dashing. 😉
I am gladdened by the news you are recovering from your eye trauma. I am now glad I had the laser hacking of my eyes done. Here is hoping that you will soon be able to make out the letters surrounding the floating demonic head of Cathy in the near future!
I’m so glad you’re feeling a bit better. Take care of yourself Ces! 🙂
Ces, I wish you all the best and hope you recover soon. But more importantly, can you let us know how your conversation with you dad went when you explained to him why you are wearing an eye patch?
Glad it’s improving. Good luck!
Thank goodness you’re getting better and I hope there’s more medical good news in the future. I have a few literal scars from medical problems of my own and I find that having an attitude like the one you’re showing doesn’t work miracles, but it does make it a lot easier to handle what comes your way and to be open to people that can help you.
All the best Ces and I look forward to all forms of your work as you feel comfortable and capable of producing them.
Aaaargh. Just reading the description was making me cringe and making my eyes water. So it must have sucked a lot more to have this actually happen to you.
I wish you a speedy recovery.
Also, I’d like to note that it’s easier to offer retroactive sympathy; if you make a comment expressing concern for the continued vital signs of the author and it turns out they had a 24-hour bug and then decided to go on vacation without further updates, it can be awkward. Making a “Get back to work you lazy cartoonist who provides me with free entertainment!” message is even more awkward if the following post is by someone who figured the readers should be informed after the funeral . . .
So I’ll add in a “Get well soon!” and postdate it a week.
Wow, that is trauma! Good to hear that it’s healing well. Eye injuries are very worrying, just because it is such a basic sense that we don’t think much about until it’s imperiled.
Get more rest and don’t draw until it’s not a strain to do so — we won’t go anywhere! We’ll keep an eye on the live bookmark and be here when you get back.
Whew! I mean I’m sorry to hear you still have a way to go, but obvioulsy glad to hear you’re healing, and faster then expected.
Take care, sir.
Yikes! That sounds awful, so glad you are on the road to full recovery. I recently went to the eye doctor and unfortunately got some not-so-great news. Thanks for sharing your story with us. I am encouraged by the fact no pus is coming out of my eye, maybe I will also heal faster than expected, and that there is a possibility I too might wait alongside Mr. Philbin.
While it’s all fine and dandy that you;re feeling better, what am I supposed to do with this hobo’s eye now?
I’m glad your eye is getting better and hope it’ll continue to do so. Sending healing thoughts your way.
I too am glad to hear you are getting better! Boy, now I’m going to be rather more careful about my contact care. Though all I ever get is the occasional stye.
Huzzah! You are getting better! You are in our thoughts and prayers, dear wordsmith.
WOW! Glad you caught it in time!
Where are society’s values that a famous cartoonist has to wait longer than a TV personality with millions of dollars?
Best wishes for a full and complete recovery, eye disease sucks in so many ways, not the least of which is the pain.
Glad to hear you caught the problem in time and are having it treated. *sends healing thoughts*
Question: are Regis’ eyes as strangely dilated in person as they seem on tv?
Glad to hear you’re getting the best of care and are on the mend. Best wishes for a speedy recovery. Who knows, maybe through a freak accident you’ll even end up with x-ray vision or something cool like that.
Glad to hear you’re on the mend. Hope you make a full and speedy recovery. Once your vision is back to working order you should check out Spalding Gray’s book, Gray’s Anatomy. You’ll be thankful that you didn’t have to follow his road to recovery…though I’d love to see the set of Medium Large cartoons inspired by the Elvis Presley of Psychic Surgeons.
As a result of recent cataract surgery, i ended up with a couple “floaters” (which will, one hopes, go away in time). It’s like having two amoebas living in your eye. I call them “Manny” and “Moe”, which helps not at all. And i thought i had it bad.
So, though everything else is falling apart, i can see like a 20-year old. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
